CARLA MATTII
Rumore Bianco
Galleria 1/9 Unosunove arte contemporanea is delighted to announce the first exhibition in Rome of the Italian artist Carla Mattii (1971, Fermo, AP). Her artistic search has been focusing on the analysis and exploration of the thin line which separates reality and fiction, natural and artificial beauty. Through photography, painting and sculpture Carla Mattii has created a very personal herbarium, a series of manufactured organisms which are the product of hybrid creations and artificial grafts.
The common trait is always the manipulation of a natural element through new technologies: digital elaboration, photo-retouch, 3D scanners, processes of rapid prototyping. All instruments which allow the artists to concentrate on the activity that has always fascinated mankind: imitating nature as well as the changing and improving it according to personal necessities or desires.
For the exhibition Rumore Bianco Carla Mattii has taken a big step forward along this path. Two large installations, hosted in the exhibition spaces of galleria 1/9 Unosunove highlight the firm and lucid intention to intervene not just in the form but especially in the internal geometry of nature.
The installation Waiting for the Rain reproduces the form and use of an ancient music and ceremonial instrument called “palo de lluvia” or rainstick, and emphasizes its function through highly technological superstructures. This machine, like the original and archaic instrument from which it takes inspiration, will artificially recreate the sound of the rain through a device related to humidity needed by the real plants part of the installation. Furthermore, a virtual smell of the rain will permeate the space through the use of a synthetic essence that will reproduce its olfactory characteristics. Two real elements will be recreated “in laboratory” and the only natural element will be the plants whose function will be the regulation of the cycle of the machine.
It is not a mimesis of nature but the creation of a post-nature in a space which is completely different from the one where we are used to observing natural phenomena.
