unosolo, the project room of 1/9unosunove, is delighted to present the first solo show in Italy by US artist Lisa Williamson (b.1977, Champaign, Illinois).
There is an inherent logic or vocabulary within the work of Lisa Williamson, one that traverses, shape-shifts and links together in bizarre and tangential ways. What remains most important to the artist is the formation of a distinct and imperfect language, an ongoing list of subjects that remains partial and malleable, continually cross-referencing and becoming actualized through whatever material makes sense. She is interested in simultaneously working out and then confusing the boundaries that an artist exists and produces within.
All of her works, even those that seem the most formal or reduced, derive from a somewhat literary or text-based frame work. Totally reduced and often limited to just a few colors and shapes, her works often function as very base sketches, beginning with the most low and repetitive forms as means for development, a way of pushing forward and almost clearing one’s head. For her exhibition at unosolo, the artist has created a series of works on linen that are each paired together with a ‘mate’ object. Resembling one another in both form and scale, each pair reinforces the significance of the proposal itself. Subtle, contemplative and modest in demeanor, Williamson’s installation describes the act of thinking and making, of looking and relating to objects of this world with stage-like presence.
