Julieta Aranda
Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick
In her first solo exhibition in Italy, Mexican artist Julieta Aranda (1975, Mexico City) presents the project entitled Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick: conceived and displayed for the first time in Berlin, it is now presented in a developed and renewed form in the spaces of 1/9 unosunove arte contemporanea.
The show is entitled after the first newspaper published in the Americas, in Boston, Thursday, September 25th, 1690, which, like many others newspapers of the day, had an extremely short life span: it was withdrawn from circulation the day after it was printed, due to censorship.
The artist compiled and printed a special newspaper that will not be made public nor is meant to be read, but is presented as a physical object through its reuse for the most diverse purposes, both functional and private ones: it becomes a drop cloth, food wrapping, a sponge to dry wet shoes, a window covering, a mop, and finally a paper pulp for the production of hand-made blank paper.
The articles in the newspaper – ranging from the imprisonment of the Russian Tsar in 1917, the moonwalk in 1971, the bombing of TWA jetliner in 1986, the demise of Laika, the space-dog, the 1952 atomic bomb test in Nevada – are only partially visible thorugh life-size photographs, installations and sculptures which engage the observer to actively participate at the exact moment of reading, paying special attention to the points in which factual reality becomes altered by the act of reading it.
The news are decontextualised, removed from the historical period which had sanctioned them: once witnesses of historical events, they are now converted into witnesses of an everyday and private story, somehow also a universal one.
Julieta Aranda’s work is currently on display at the Solomon R. Guggenheim (New York) where she inaugurated Intervals, a new contemporary art series designed to reflect the spirit of today’s most innovative practices: the program will invite a diverse range of artists to interact with the peculiar space of the museum for a succession of solo presentations.
