HEIDRUN SANDBICHLER
Zone Periferiche
Religion, natural sciences and biological processes have always represented important elements in the work of the Austrian artist Heidrun Sandbichler. By interrelating with the venues, assimilating historical and social elements and establishing various connections with them, she creates artworks with manifold conceptual and formal implications.
On the occasion of her first Italian solo show entitled “Zone Periferiche” Heidrun Sandbichler returns to one of her favourite themes: the association between different traditions and cultures. An installation on the floor is inspired by the archeological structures of the excavations in the Basilica di San Clemente and adapts them to the exhibition space of the gallery. Throughout the ages this basilica has been modified, destroyed, enlarged and provided with new religious contents: partly unexplored up to now, it symbolizes the stratification and permeability of human concepts the artist deals with. As to the three light boxes with images and texts from “Gesù di Nazareth” directed by Franco Zeffirelli, Heidrun Sandbichler took one of those diaries with illustrations or texts you can find in any stationery store and utilized them like an album to attach photographs of the film and work on them through quotations taken from the story. Similarly for the two canvases and the gelatin silver print, the allusion to Christian iconography is evident: the loss of innocence, the reference to the unknown, codified contents and hermetic thoughts.
The interest of the artist deals with the delicate borderline between nature and religion, everyday life and memory, politics and mass-media, with the peripheral areas of heresy which are translated into the aesthetic language with amazing coherence, independently from the technique.
