For Independent 20th Century 2023, 1/9unosunove (Rome) presents a selection of paintings by Sergio Lombardo (Rome, 1939), Gesti Tipici. This series testifies the power with which Lombardo’s experimental language burst into Italian art of the period. Although very young, already in these early works, Lombardo demonstrates all the aesthetic potential that he will develop in his artistic research in the following decades. In the first half of the 1960s, Sergio Lombardo, in his early twenties, is already one of the main players in the Roman and national art scene. The Italian capital found itself at an important crossroads of international artistic experiences, and Lombardo sensed that the European avant-garde could find in Rome one of its outposts. In fact, he recognized, in the group of the Artists of Piazza del Popolo of which he was a member, the fundamental instances for a revolution in pictorial language and became its spokesman and proponent.
